Folks, I’m about ready to pop with my second son….as in it’s just over three weeks from my due date! EEEEKK! While I’m in full-blown nesting mode and STILL trying to finish his nursery, I’ve also been working on creating some cute little outfits for him to rock.
I hadn’t yet discovered the wonderful world of Silhouetting when I was pregnant with my first son, so he missed out on a lot of mom’s craftiness during his first year. Poor fella. However, thanks to him having a TON of plain white onesies left over that we packed away in storage, I’ve got plenty of material to give his brother some totally rad gear.
Since Baby Boy #2 is going to be an October baby, he’s of course going to need something to mark his very first Halloween….and his Southern girl for a mom just couldn’t pass up a monogram. But it’s a cool monogram with skulls. No worries.
Oh, and there’s extra goodness in this post too….not only is it Silhouette Challenge time again, BUT we’re also hosting an amazing giveaway for a $140 Amazon gift card! Keep reading for all the details!
Spooktacular Monogram Onesie for Baby’s First Halloween + GIVEAWAY!
Supplies
- White onesie
- Silhouette Cameo, cutting mat, & blade
- Heat transfer vinyl (HTV)
- Skull monogram design
- Iron
- Cookie sheet
- Sheet of multi use paper
The Design
I spotted this cute skulls monogram design over at the Silhouette Design Store and I instantly fell in love. It was super cute but still boyish….at least enough to satisfy my husband. I don’t know how many times I hear him tell me “Too girly!” when I’m making projects for my boys, especially when I use glitter HTV. *sigh* Men.
{Oh, another little bonus with this file is that it comes with the full monogram alphabet, so no need to purchase a separate file! I had already bought a circle monogram font file from Etsy ages ago, but I was pleasantly surprised to see all those letters when I opened up this beauty….gotta love a two-for-one!}
Cutting Out the HTV
Before cutting out the HTV with my Silhouette, I first sized my design and ensured the black skull element overlapped on top of the orange circle just a wee bit. This would help me when I went to apply the cuts to make sure there was no white fabric peek-a-booing between the two pieces.
Then I got to cutting all three pieces. I first cut out the monogram in some lime green HTV….and I was super proud of myself for actually remembering to flip it before sending it to my Silhouette! #littlethings
I used the following cut settings for Heat Transfer Material: Smooth-
- Blade: 2
- Speed: 8
- Thickness: 4
Next up came the circle in orange HTV, and I used the same cut settings here.
The final cut was the skull circle frame. Since this was going to be in black glitter HTV (my all-time favorite material to use with my Silhouette!), I used the following cut settings for Heat Transfer Material: Flocked-
- Blade: 3
- Speed: 5
- Thickness: 33
All three pieces cut beautifully, and surprisingly, the skulls weren’t that bad to weed! That’s the beauty of glitter HTV….and a nice pair of pointy craft tweezers.
Applying the HTV
I still don’t have a heat press yet….maybe I’ll finally get one whenever I finish planning the craft room of my dreams. (#somedayitllhappen) So it’s my regular iron to the rescue!
I first applied the green and orange layers at the same time by running my pre-heated iron (set to Cotton) over top, using a sheet of multi use paper in between.
{Please pardon my poor lighting and awkward alien hand!}
After about 20 seconds, I checked to see how the adhesion was looking, then slowly peeled away the clear backing from both pieces.
The same steps were taken to apply the black skull piece….and I just LOVE that glitter HTV!
BPB’s Spooktacular Skull Monogram Onesie!
Take a look at how my soon-to-be-here second son’s skull monogram onesie turned out! I think it’s just perfect for an October baby boy’s first Halloween….and a nice way to jazz up a hand-me-down white onesie from his older brother. ;)

Thanks so much, Kelly! I know what you mean....I wish I had my Silhouette when Rowan was a super wee one too. There are so many cute baby things to create. I might go a little overboard with Baby #2 now.....if I can find the time, and especially, energy! :)

What a cute onesie! Great job! I am always scared to try multi colored projects for fear I won't get them lined up correctly. Your project gives me hope that some day I can try it!

Thank you, Bev! I was also terrified to try my first multi-colored project (and still get quite anxious when it comes time to apply everything...I'm so OCD!). Just dive right in and give it a go! The worst that can happen is that it's a little off, and you can always just zap the HTV off with your iron and start over if you want. No big deal! :)
