We recently moved, and I thought our new front door deserved a little beautification.

I therefore got my craft on and whipped up a winter-themed snowman door hanger to help get us from Christmas to Spring.

Since we’re also HUGE Kentucky basketball fans (have you seen my other UK basketball wreath yet?), I decided to customize this snowman with some UK and basketball fun in honor of the Cats.

Hey, you can take the girl out of Big Blue Nation, but you can’t take Big Blue Nation out of the girl. ;)

The great thing about this type of project is that you can customize it in any way, including changing up the colors and sport “buttons” for any team you support!

Other Fun Kentucky (or Any State) Craft Ideas

As you all are probably well aware by now, I’m from Kentucky but currently reside in Alabama.

Now, football may reign supreme in these parts, but we all know that college basketball is really where it’s at!

I made an aforementioned UK basketball ornament wreath several years ago, but it’s hanging in my parents’ basement back in the Bluegrass.

We need to represent down here in Bama too!

Since I have plenty of other DIY wreaths, I decided to make a door hanger that’s more winter-general, and gave it a Wildcat twist.

I already have some other fun Kentucky projects around the house (check them out below), so what’s one more? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Snowman Door Hanger Supplies

Here’s what I used to make this snowman door hanger:

• Wooden snowman cutout
  • I purchased and painted mine at a local paint-your-own-door-hanger business, but you can find some online here and here to paint one at your home
• Craft paints & paint brushes
• Silhouette Cameo, vinyl, & transfer tape
  • Only if you’re a super perfectionist with have terrible handwriting like me…otherwise, just paint everything
• Small branches/sticks and hot glue
• Small drill & wire for hanging

How to Make a Snowman Door Hanger

I’ve made several different wooden door hangers, but this was only my second attempt at hand-painting an entire one without assistance from my beloved Silhouette Cameo.

I’m just too perfectionistic and self-critical, but thanks to my first go-round with my whimsical Christmas stocking, I realized they’re not that hard to do!

It’s just paint. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

If you don’t like something, paint over it and start again.

Or slap some vinyl on it, which is what I ended up doing.

So here’s how Mr. Snowman looked when I brought him home from a local paint-your-own-door-hanger business.

He was looking very wintery and basketbally, but not yet UK basketbally.

So it was vinyl to the rescue!

The Vinyl Additions

Since I don’t trust myself to do any lettering by hand yet (and certainly not any recognizable logos!), I busted out my favorite crafting tool in the history of ever to take care of the job: my Silhouette Cameo.

I found UK’s logo online and traced it in Silhouette Studio, then cut out two decals in some white vinyl.

The large one was for the snowman’s hat, while the small one would adorn his scarf.

For the “Go Big Blue!” saying on his belly, I chose a font called Luna that I think was part of a previous monthly value font bundle.

It looks hand-drawn and is the perfect style for a project like this, and it was cut out in black vinyl.

The Snowman Stick Arms

And no snowman is complete without stick arms, amiright?

For this step, I headed out to our {new!} backyard and found the perfect stick to make two arms.

My husband was recruited to help trim the pieces to size, then I hot glued the various bits together, then attached the arms to the back with some more hot glue.

I think he’s just adorable and perfect for post-Christmas winter.

He’ll definitely be leading us into March Madness in style! ;)
