Howdy, guys!  I know it’s been awhile since I’ve shared anything here recently….my apologies!  I’ve been a little preoccupied in my personal offline life lately, but moving tends to do that to ya.  Yep, we just moved into a new abode a few weeks ago!

So. much. packing.  And unpacking.  And cleaning!  Ugh, indeed.

I somehow managed to find the energy to get my craft on again and I’m back {finally} with a new post….the first one from the new house too!  Woot Woot!

I thought our new front door deserved a little beautification, so I whipped up a winter-themed door hanger to get us from Christmas to the spring….and one that is also an ode to our love of Kentucky basketball!  You can take the girl out of Big Blue Nation, but you can’t take Big Blue Nation out of the girl. ;)

Univ. of Kentucky Basketball Snowman Door Hanger

As you all are probably well aware by now, I’m from Kentucky but currently reside in Alabama.  Now, football may reign supreme in these parts, but we all know that college basketball is really where it’s at!

I made a UK ornament wreath several years ago, but that is hanging in my parents’ basement back in the Bluegrass.  We need to represent down here in Bama too!  And since I already have plenty of fall and Christmas wreaths (see my Project Gallery for lots of proof), I decided to make a door hanger that’s more winter-general, and gave it a Wildcat twist.

The nice thing about this project too is that you can easily customize it to any team or sport….although I’m not sure why you would want to do such a thing. ;)

Supplies

  • Wooden snowman cutout
  • Craft paints & paint brushes
  • Silhouette Cameo, vinyl, & transfer tape (only if you’re super OCD and have terrible handwriting/painting skills like me….otherwise, just paint everything!)
  • Sticks and hot glue
  • Small drill & wire for hanging

The Funny Back Story

Funny story about how this snowman came to be:  After I shared my Christmas stocking door hanger, I received an email from a lovely gal named Leah.  She said she lives in the same part of Alabama as me and since she’s a crafty gal like myself (and fellow Silhouette lover), she wanted to know the location of where I took that painting class.  Well long story short and several emails later, we hit things off and decided to meet up for a girls’ afternoon painting adventure at this same painting studio in town, and snowmen were the chosen creations!

Leah crafted a cute little fella with a teal scarf, snowflakes, and their last name, while I went the sporty route.  We both had a great time and even went back a week later with our little boys and made some reindeer handprint ornaments.

It was my first real-life fan encounter. ;)  Ha, just kidding, Leah!

The Snowman Cutout

I’ve made several different wooden door hangers (once again, Project Gallery!), but this was only my second attempt at hand-painting an entire one without assistance from my beloved Silhouette Cameo.  I’m just too OCD and self-critical, but thanks to my first go-round with my whimsical Christmas stocking, I realized they’re not that hard to do!

It’s just paint after all….if you don’t like something, paint over it and start again.  Or slap vinyl on it….which is what I ended up doing. ;)

So here’s how Mr. Snowman looked when I brought him home.  He was very wintery and basketbally, but not yet UK basketbally.  So it was vinyl to the rescue!

The Vinyl Additions

Since I don’t trust myself to do any lettering by hand yet (and certainly not any recognizable logos!), I busted out my favorite crafting tool in the history of ever to take care of the job: my Silhouette Cameo.

I found UK’s logo online and traced it in Silhouette Studio, then cut out two decals in some white vinyl.  The large one was for the snowman’s hat, while the small one would adorn his scarf.

For the “Go Big Blue!” saying on his belly, I chose a font called Luna that I think was part of a previous monthly bundle from The Hungry JPEG.  It looks hand-drawn and is the perfect style for a project like this, and it was cut out in black vinyl.

The Stick Arms

And no snowman is complete without stick arms, right?  For this, I headed out to our {new!} backyard and found the perfect stick to make two arms.  My husband was recruited to help trim the pieces to size, then I hot glued the various bits together, then attached the arms to the back with some more hot glue.

The Completed Univ. of Kentucky Basketball Snowman Door Hanger!

And here’s my final UK snowman!  I think he’s just adorable and perfect for post-Christmas winter.  He’ll definitely be leading us into March Madness in style! ;)
