DIY ‘Trick or Treat Yourself’ Halloween Candy Sign + FREE Cut File
We live out in the county, and therefore our neighborhood doesn’t get too many trick-or-treaters on Halloween.
Wanna know how many we got last year?
One. Yep, just a single little girl.
She was dressed in the coolest DIY LEGO costume and I made sure to give her a couple hefty handfuls of candy.
I decided to make a little sign to put near our candy bowl to let any kiddos that DO come trick-or-treating know that they can help themselves to our sweet treats.
Halloween Candy Bowl Sign Supplies
Confession: I actually made this sign last year but never got around to blogging about it. Whoops. Typical me. ;)
I’m definitely not one to blog in a timely manner.
Hey, at least I got this thing posted and shared in under two years, unlike our board and batten hallway hook wall…
Moving on…
Here’s what I used for this ‘TRICK OR TREAT YOURSELF’ Halloween candy bowl sign:
- Wooden blank
- Black craft paint
- Paint brush
- Painter’s Pyramids
- Silhouette Cameo
- Vinyl
- White
- Orange
- Purple
- Lime green
- Transfer tape
- Craft tweezers
- Strip of painter’s tape
- Scraper
- Scissors
My ‘Trick or Treat Yourself’ Design Mockup
Since I’d be cutting out the elements in vinyl with my Silhouette Cameo, I created my design in Silhouette Studio.
I used one of my favorite font families for this layered vinyl look.
At first, I just had it saying ‘TRICK OR TREAT YOURSELF.’
However, my husband is a buzzkill and thinks that that would be asking for a greedy youngster to empty our entire candy bowl into his/her treat bag, leaving nothing behind for others.
Man, have a little faith in our younger generations, will ya? I tell you what.
So to appease him, I added the last line.

Painting the Wooden Blank
Since my design was now finalized, the wooden blank then got a nice coating of some black craft paint and was set aside to dry.

If this looks a little familiar, it may be because I used one of these wooden blanks for the Halloween footprint craft that I made for my oldest son.
Hey, they’re inexpensive and make easy DIY holiday decor, so I keep ’em handy.
Cutting Out The Vinyl
Now it was time to cut out the vinyl pieces with my Silhouette Cameo.
Here are the cut settings I used in Silhouette Studio:

One color at a time was loaded into my Cameo and cut.

Wham-o!
Here’s how all the vinyl pieces looked after being cut, trimmed, weeded, and some transfer tape applied over top.
You’ll notice that some of the pieces have a distressed look to them. Typically fonts like this are avoided when cutting vinyl because they’re hard to weed and all those cut lines can be problematic.
Normally, clean and crisp cut lines are the name of the game.
However, these were perfect for this design!
And to remove those little distressed bits, I simply balled up a piece of transfer tape and blotted it over and over until those elements were removed.
Now the letters have the perfect rough, distressed look.

Applying The Vinyl
After layering the individual pieces on the ‘TRICK OR TREAT YOURSELF’ lines, I arranged everything on the board to ensure correct placement, then applied them one at a time using the hinge method.
That’s why the yellow strip of painter’s tape is there…it’s acting as the hinge.
You can read more about the hinge method here (it’s the best and easiest way to ensure your vinyl is applied straight and centered!).

The Final ‘Trick or Treat Yourself’ Halloween Candy Bowl Sign!
And here’s how our ‘TRICK OR TREAT YOURSELF’ sign looks in our Halloween candy bowl/cauldron!
I think it turned out super cute, and you can’t beat a quick and easy DIY project that uses supplies you already have on-hand!

Mr. Bones is doing a mighty fine job of monitoring the candy situation.

Here’s what our little trick-or-treaters (the handful that we might get) will see as they head up our sidewalk.
The candy will be ready and waiting for them!

Now I’ve just gotta keep MY little monsters from devouring all the sweet treats before the 31st…
