Supplies

Here’s what I used to make this funky Fourth of July sign:

My Mockup

This sign would be made using the super amazing reverse canvas method that I recently discovered. You might recall the glittery flower truck sign that I shared not too long ago, and you can see my full tutorial for how to make a reverse canvas…once you try it, you’ll be hooked too!

Y’all know I love me my Silhouette Cameo, so of course, I used it again for this project. Here’s the mockup I created in Silhouette Studio:

The Funky Font

The funkiness of this festive sign came courtesy of a super cool font called Childish Reverie.

It is SO easy to mix and match different colors with it, plus it comes with its own doodle dingbat font too for layering, which just amps up the funk factor even more.

See some of the different possibilities you can do with it?? I love me a good multi-use font.

This cool font is currently a part of The Crafters Delight Vol. 4 Bundle that you can find over at DesignBundles.net!

It features 16 premium fonts and 40 design packs including fun frames, sayings, doodles, monograms, and more, all at 92% off. Plus, it comes with a full commercial license. Such a great deal, I know.

It’s only available for a limited time, though, so you better snatch it up while you can!

Back to the design!

The first thing I did was obviously type out the words “Stars & Stripes Forever,” which you can see below in solid blue. From there, I got to funkifying it.

First, I ungrouped each word to isolate all the individual letters. Then for the letters that had separate parts, I had to release their paths to ungroup them all too.

Then I started really customizing my mockup by using the Fill Color tool and changing the colors of whole letters or parts of letters. Once I was happy with the mix, I added in the extra fun doohickeys by using the Childish Reverie Doodles dingbat font, and you can see the final multi-colored design below.

Isn’t it amazing how much those little elements add to the design??

Note: The stars are not part of Childish Reverie, so I grabbed those from the Little Firecracker design that is also a part of the Crafters Delight Vol. 4 Bundle. I love being able to utilize elements from all kinds of designs!

Cutting Out the Glitter HTV

Once my design was finalized, it was time to cut out the glitter HTV!

First, I selected all the extra elements that would overlap letters and set them aside in Silhouette Studio…they’d be cut at the same time as the words, but they’d have to be added last.

In order to cut the squiggle out of the “o” in “Forever,” I had to modify both halves first. This was an easy task that only took some subtracting:

Once that was done, I got to cutting out the design with my Silhouette Cameo, and I did this in three steps based on the color of the glitter HTV (and hooray for remembering to mirror!).

You’ll notice below that the extra elements I set aside above are now moved back to be cut out with the rest of their colored letters/lines. I’d just trim them out of the main piece and add them separately at the end.

Here’s how everything looked after being cut, trimmed, and weeded:

Prepping the Reverse Canvas & Frame

Since the HTV was ready to go, it was time to prep the canvas and frame.

I first removed the canvas from its wooden frame (once again, check out my full reverse canvas tutorial for all the details on this process), then sanded and spray painted the frame in a cheery shade of bright red.

While the frame was drying, I started applying the HTV to the canvas using my iron, a sheet of multi-use paper (to protect the already-applied HTV from the heat), and a cookie sheet.

First, I added the dark blue, then the light blue, and finally the red. Next, all the extra elements were put into place and added as well.

The final step was then trimming up the edges of the canvas and attaching it to the now-dried frame with some hot glue.

The Completed Funky Fourth of July Sign!

Here’s how it looks! Super festive with just the right amount of funkiness. I love how it’s playful and fun and different, but still patriotic. No traditional holiday decor here!

And that glitter. Oh, how I love me some glitter. Sparkles for days!
