DIY Halloween Candles Using Vinyl Embellishments + FREE Cut Files

I recently shared our Halloween mantel decor and I absolutely LOVE it. When I was putting the final touches on it, I realized that our trio of black pillar candles was looking rather….boring. Too much solid black and nothing special. They needed moooore.

So, being the crafty girl that I am who’s also obsessed with my Silhouette Cameo and vinyling all the things, I decided to jazz them up with a little transparent glitter vinyl!

Now, these are purely decorative and I don’t plan on burning them (although I did light the wicks for a split second just because my momma always said that it’s bad luck to have an unburned candle in your house, and I’m not one to test karma).

I had originally wanted to use these black melt top LED candles, but of course my store didn’t carry them and they’re not available online. Boo. So, these inexpensive real wax pillar candles were substituted and they’ve worked out just fine.

If you’re planning on burning your candles, this transparent glitter vinyl easily pulls off, so you can remove the designs as needed.

Supplies

Here’s what I used to quickly make these DIY Halloween candles:

My Halloween Candle Design Mockups

Here’s the trio of designs that I came up with in Silhouette Studio, and all have a candy corn color scheme to go with the rest of the mantel decor:

  • Spiders and webs
  • BOO
  • Abstract lines

Cutting Out The Designs in Transparent Glitter Vinyl

I first tried out some transparent glitter vinyl when I made some fun crafty window clings for my craft room.

It’s such a unique type of vinyl because it’s a little glittery and it also has just a wee bit of transparency.

So, I pulled out my vinyl storage organizer and grabbed three sheets of transparent glitter vinyl, one each of orange, yellow, and silver.

After finalizing my cut settings in Silhouette Studio…

… one by one, I cut out my designs in the vinyl using my Silhouette Cameo.

After being trimmed and weeded, here’s how all three colors looked:

Applying the Vinyl to the Candles

Now it was application time!

This was really easy because I just peeled and stuck the vinyl with no real rhyme or reason. I did the spider candle first, followed by the abstract lines (with a little trimming with scissors at the end), then the BOO one last.

The only vinyl pieces that I used transfer tape for were the BOO set, just because I wanted to make sure the spacing and alignment didn’t get messed up by free-handing it.

This was by far the quickest and easiest vinyl project I’ve ever done!

The Final DIY Halloween Candles!

Here’s how my DIY Halloween candles turned out! Pretty cute with just enough spookiness, if I do say so myself.

That little bit of glittery, glitzy glam is a nice touch too. I mean, who doesn’t love some sparkles?

And even though this is transparent glitter vinyl, it’s not too see through! The colors really POP off the black candle.

And here’s how the candles look displayed with the rest of our Halloween mantel. They fit right in and no longer blend in with the solid black bats on the wall.

I envision more inexpensive holiday candles in my DIY future!
