Well today is bittersweet, friends. It’s the last day of our Holiday Craft Party (boo!), but today’s theme is Home Decor and I am SO excited to share with you this colorful and glittery Christmas sign (yay!)!
I’m definitely a non-traditional holiday decor kinda gal (have you seen my Shabby Chic fall door hanger??), so I wanted to pull in some bright colors for a cheery Christmas sign. What better way to add some colorful sparkles than with glitter, amiright? I therefore decided to jazz up a phrase from the classic Jingle Bells holiday carol, and I LOVE how it turned out!

Colorful & Glittery Christmas Sign: Making Spirits Bright!
Supplies
- Sanded wood board
- White spray paint
- Double-sided adhesive paper
- Black vinyl
- Silhouette Cameo & cutting mat
- Fine glitter in various colors
- Clear spray sealant
My Design
My design was created in Silhouette Studio since I’d be cutting the wording out with my Silhouette Cameo.
I knew I wanted to use glittered letters for the “BRIGHT” portion, so I decided to choose a font for that word that was big and basic. That way the actual glitter would be the star of this holiday show. For the other words, I chose a thin and wispy script font called Midnight Cali. I think they play nicely off each other.
Painting the Board
I first gave my board a good sanding on all sides and edges, followed by a couple coats of white spray paint.
The Cut Elements
The “making spirits” portion of the design was cut out of some black vinyl using my Silhouette Cameo. For “BRIGHT,” I first thought about cutting out each letter in some glittered card stock, but I haven’t had much success with getting crisp, clean cuts in that type of paper. Then I considered cutting a stencil and painting each letter in a different color then using Mod Podge or another type of glue to adhere the fine glitter.
However, as I thought about it more (and realized that would be way too much work), I remembered that my blogging buddy Meredith from UnOriginal Mom shared a super cute Christmas pallet sign last year that used some double-sided adhesive paper to add a glittery touch….and this would be perfect for my project too!
Applying the Words
I used a bit of painter’s tape to help keep the elements in place as I eyeballed their positions, along with a strip of washi tape along the bottom to ensure even spacing. Then I used the hinge method (which you can read more about here) and applied each piece to the board one at a time.
For the double-sided adhesive paper, I peeled away the yellow paper backing, applied the adhesive layer to the board, then peeled away the white paper off the top. It was really easy to use!
Adding the Glitter
I love me some variety packs because I like having options. Luckily, I have a ton of fine glitter left over from making a couple personalized glitter ornaments for my son and niece last year, so I pulled out the bottles that most closely matched the colors of my mockup….
….peeled up the white paper off the double-sided adhesive paper, working one letter at a time….
….then got to adding the glitter. I first started encouraging its adhesion with a small paint brush but quickly realized my finger would work much better.
After each letter was glitterfied, I took the sign out back and blew off all the excess (there wasn’t much to try and salvage…boo.) then moved along to the next letter.
The Completed ‘Making Spirits Bright’ Christmas Sign!
And here’s my completed sign! I love the non-traditional colors of it, and of course the glitter! While I haven’t yet added any clear spray sealant overtop just yet to make sure none of the glitter comes off (how sad would that be?!), I plan on doing that step before putting this sign away in storage after the holidays. This is definitely one of my most favorite creations to date! ;)
